Brian Matthews commenced working at the Adelaide Children's Hospital Haematology routine laboratory. He developed a strong interested in Paediatric blood film morphology. In 1970 he attained the Fellowship in Haematology by examination. At amalgamation with the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital I gained further experience in Neonatal and Obstetric morphology. After 39 years at the Women's and Children's Hospital he became the Senior Lecturer in Haematology at the University of South Australia. This position was held for two and one half years. An early retirement led to a change in morphology experience at the Adelaide Zoo.
