After receiving his PhD in cell culture engineering in 1995, Dr Nielsen did his postdoctoral work on haematopoietic cell culture engineering at Northwestern University in Chicago. During his two years in Chicago, he worked on developing bioreactors for haematopoietic cell culture as well as pharmacokinetic models for cell products. He returned to Australia to establish biological engineering at The University of Queensland, where he now is the Chair of Biological Engineering as well as a group leader in the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. Recently, his group has developed and patented large scale processes for the production of white and red blood cells in close collaboration with the Australian Red Cross Blood Services. |
